My Thoughts after Tutors comments - Assignment 3

RESPONSES TO ASSIGNMENT 3

I have received my comments to my assignment 3 from my tutor.
A number of points were made about my images which straight away are obvious to me, but I hadn't been aware prior to receiving my feedback. My tutor pointing out these things means i'm learning so much.

I hadn't actually noticed all these errors, however now I cant imagine how I didn't see them.  It has definitely, (hopefully), made me more aware of shadows and building angles when taking further shots.

I feel that often I am thinking hard about what the picture needs to say, ie. buildings in use, and maybe concentrating more on that, then making mistakes on the technicalities.

It is quite difficult to be where you want to be ie. at the building telling the story you want and having the correct sunlight and interesting skies to go with.  Often you are at a place which isn't possible to return to, you could have the perfect building and story, but imperfect weather conditions. An example of this is at Cothay Manor, img 4412, the private garden.  I agree the sky is uninteresting but I am unable to recreate this due to its location, but I do very much like the photograph.

I have learnt also about my camera positioning causing distortion to angles - and will try to make corrections either with a retake or photoshop.  The fireplace Img 5319, this is an example of being excited at the building and its use and rushing the photo.  Also I had two members of forest staff who wanted to chat and help, then I feel embarrassed and rush, I have noticed others like to get involved which can be off putting.

With Down Hall, Img 5361, I had liked this picture as it wasn't just a standard front view, I did have another example showing the drive however this still is a little shaded.  The rear view was also too shaded so I shall return and try some retakes to try and improve upon these, trying a different time of day and weather conditions.

The same for the Tea room I shall try and improve upon the shadow across the building.  I was trying to think of an alternative for Img 5439, to take one at dusk will be great, just the idea I wanted !! - it just wouldn't come to mind.

With it being Christmas my days have been somewhat hectic and I haven't had the time to do the retakes, but now the new year is here I will hopefully have the time to venture out more and upgrade these before my assessment.

I took note of your advice to read The Photograph, by Graham Clarke.. I have actually purchased this book already.  Just need to read it now.
